Cash Cobain has been making waves as a pioneer of the “sexy drill” subgenre, and it seems his creativity didn’t go unnoticed. Earlier this July, pop superstar Justin Bieber tapped the New York rapper-producer for a feature on his new album, SWAG.
From Instagram DMs to the Studio
In a recent conversation with Rolling Stone (July 29), Cash Cobain shared how his collaboration with Bieber came to life. What started as a simple direct message of support soon turned into a full-blown studio session.
“Everybody kept sending me that post, so I followed him and wrote, ‘Now we got to work. We got to get something in,’” Cash recalled, referencing Bieber’s post of his track Trippin on a Yacht. “He was like, ‘All right, bet. Definitely got to do it, I f— with your sh–.’”
Vibing With Bieber
Cash soon pulled up to Bieber’s home, where they began creating together. “We had, like, a laptop, speakers, and instruments in this circle,” he said. “We was just vibing. … That n—a’s a movie. He was just throwing out ideas. I’d never seen him so locked in like that. I’m pretty sure that sh– will be fire.”
The two spent hours experimenting with beats until they found the perfect sound. “He’s swaggy. He’s been on the swag sh– for a little minute,” Cash added. “But we was also just talking regular sh–, too. We cool. He’d check on me like, ‘I’m just checking on you.’”
The Track That Made the Cut
A week before the release of SWAG, Bieber told Cash he was trying to get one of their collaborations on the album. “I’m like, ‘All right, bet,’” Cash said. “So I fixed it up and then the next day or the day after, that sh– was out.”
Their track, “SWAG”, landed as track No. 18 on the album, also featuring Eddie Benjamin. The project made a powerful debut, entering the Billboard 200 at No. 2 with 163,000 album-equivalent units sold.
Respect for Bieber
Cash couldn’t hide his admiration for the pop icon. “Man, who hasn’t been listening to Justin Bieber? Come on, it’s Bieber,” he said. “That boy into it, you know? He on top of his game. He knows what’s good. He knows what’s going on.”
What’s Next for Cash
As Bieber continues celebrating the success of SWAG, Cash Cobain is focused on his own path. He’s preparing for his Party With Slizzy Tour, kicking off September 7 in New York City, and is also readying the release of his upcoming album this fall.
